Internationally acclaimed artist Fred DeAsis will be exhibiting his original kut-kut pieces along with some older works. "Art is my passion and compulsion. My mission is to revive the lost art and present to the public the beauty and rich history of the ancient art form from the Philippines," he says.
Kut-kut is an exotic Philippine art form involving sgraffito, encaustic and layering. These early century techniques merge together to produce a unique style of art constituting swirling interwoven lines, multi-layered texture, and the illusion of three-dimensional space.
DeAsis' creations are made by first treating a panel with clear emulsion, then spending many hours applying paint and medium. "My art pieces often take months to complete due to continuous layering, composing, and mixing of tints and dyes to the emulsion and lengthy drying time," he says.
DeAsis studied fine arts in Asia and Europe and participates in local and international art shows. He is an active member of the Arlington Heights Art Guild Elmhurst Artist Guild, Southeast Asian Artist coalition of North America, Barrington Area Art Council and the Chicago Artist Coalition. He is the recipient of 2006 Fil-Am TV Hall of Fame award for outstanding work in promoting Philippine art and culture.
